Sideswipe Comics: From Webcomic to the 2027 Relaunch
The problem
Comic books were built for newsstands and spinner racks. In 2017, at the height of the Marvel movies' popularity, Marvel's comics arm was reportedly cancelling around 30 titles that couldn't break even. Meanwhile, everybody was reading on their phones. So what should a comic book look like in a social media feed?
My role
Founder, publisher, writer and director. Every Sideswipe series is created, written and directed by me.
The process
- 2017: the idea. Sideswipe started as a mobile-first webcomic imprint: comics made for your phone, not print pages squeezed onto a screen.
- The format. Vertical, swipe-to-read, one or two panels per screen, bigger art and bigger lettering, with a cinematic score.
- The universe. I wrote a series bible for one shared universe, so each series stands on its own but rewards readers who follow them all.
- The first run. Early pilots went up on YouTube in 2023, and Sideswipe built a presence across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, Webtoons and more.
- The rebuild. For the relaunch, I rebuilt the production pipeline around AI tools under my art direction, with original styles and plain disclosure of how the books are made.
The result
Sideswipe Comics relaunches on Sunday, February 7, 2027 (2.7.27), and the first episodes of three series go live at once:
- ASYLUM: Who's Running the Asylum? Homeland Security's secret ASYLUM team is made up of eccentric experts with alleged abilities, and every one of them has been locked up, committed or detained.
- Genesis Next: Lilly St. James is an elite private security agent, and her client just died mysteriously on her watch.
- Sweet Dreams Unlimited: Annie is a seemingly normal 15-year-old with bullies and bad grades. Her real problem? She can travel through other people's dreams.
New episodes every week on YouTube. Rated 16+.
What I took from it
In 5th grade, I made a one-panel-a-page comic called Star Fire. It took me a few decades and a smartphone to realize I'd had it right the first time.
