Education

The problem

Digital media changes every semester. Students need skills that will still matter after the platforms change, plus a portfolio that gets them hired.

My role

Adjunct professor of social and digital media at LDS Business College / Ensign College, January 2018 to July 2025. I was also a curriculum subject-matter expert: I wrote syllabi and helped build e-learning courses with instructional designers.

The process

  • Courses: the creative process, branding, campaign strategy, mobile, social and web content, and portfolio development.
  • Principles over platforms: story, audience and design fundamentals first, then the tools.
  • AI in the classroom: I taught students to use AI as a research and brainstorming partner, and to show their prompts the way math students show their work. (See Why AI Literacy Should Be Taught in Schools.)
  • Real-world guests: in 2024, for example, I brought in a guest from the Church's Global Talent Acquisition team to talk portfolios with my class.

What I took from it

The best thing I can teach isn't a tool. It's how to learn the next one.
